EffecTech would like to congratulate Jagdeep Sagu, a PhD candidate in Physical Chemistry who carried out research at EffecTech, on the successful completion of his thesis and Viva. His PhD project was jointly funded by Loughborough University and Tata Steel and was titled “Development of Steel Substrates Using Surface Integrated Carbon Nano-structures for Supercapacitors”.
The aim of this thesis, which was supervised by Prof. Upul Wijayantha of Loughborough University, was to investigate the feasibility of using steel as a current collector in a supercapacitor, which is a type of energy storage device.
EffecTech assisted Jagdeep in his work by providing laboratory space and research materials. Jagdeep said
“EffecTech played a vital role in this research project as they produced synthetic gas mixtures that resembled the composition of the waste blast furnaces released during the steel manufacturing process at Tata Steel. They provided me with lab space, a fume cupboard and gave me all the necessary safety equipment and training so I could undertake this research in a safe and effective manner. Dr Paul Holland supervised the project at EffecTech and gave me hands on training in gas chromatography and in the safe handling of gas cylinders containing toxic and flammable gases.”
Jagdeep will graduate in December 2015 and hopes to take up a post-doctoral position continuing his research in this area.
